THE FOLLOW THROUGH
How many times have you done it yourself or seen it in sparring or
tournaments where one fighter accidentally catches the others leg in the
middle of the melee. what happens next both fighters are momentarily put
off and the fight continues. in real situations the leg might be caught
and held fear crates a situation were the defender does not want to let
the leg go. he does not want the other fighter to get his footing back
or regain his ground. this is why we teach continuous action principles
in Southern Dragon. remember each movement by your attacker should be thought
of as an opportunity to strike. during a kick regardless of how powerful
it may be the leg is actually exposed it is a target. so to is the other
leg the one supporting the fighter. remove it in the middle of a kick and
the fighter has nothing to stand on, literally.
If you catch a leg strike it if you are fighting and get in a tangle
what is it that stops you from hitting the tangling arm. mentally our minds
switch to ChinNa mode we see a tangle as an opportunity to lock or twist
when for the purpose of expediency it might be better to simply smash the
tangle.
Holy cow two seconds ago we were fighting then I got grabbed we stopped, do I do something fancy like ChinNa or do I kick him he cant block and hold me at the same time. | ![]() |
Note: This in no way reflects on Chin Na everything has its place but lets take the example of the small girl and the big 160lb kidnapper. Very few people at age ten have the years of training necessary to execute ChinNa effectively against a much bigger heavier opponent. Some times a swift kick is the best thing. On the other hand a situation such as bouncing or domestic disturbances attended by security or police demand restraint or ChinNa techniques, remember its situational.
